OUR AREA

 

Washington County is the furthest “Downeast” part of Maine and the Easternmost part of the United States.  Ten miles as the crow flies from New Brunswick, Canada.

The Village of Grand Lake Stream has a year-round population of approximately  72, but a population of 250 plus a few in the summer.  Driftwood Island is 2.5 miles from the village by road or water.

 

Features:

 

 Grand Lake Dam.  Successor to log driving dams from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

 

Grand Lake Stream Hatchery which raises Landlock Salmon that supply U.S. and Foreign Countries (tours available), 

 

Grand Lake Stream Historical Society (tours available) history of the village and area from logging, being the largest tannery in the US to its current status as a sportsmen and nature lovers paradise.

 

Grand Lake Stream Folk Art Festival July 27 & 28. 25-year-plus juried folk art event with wonderful music and food. Draws 5000 plus visitors.

 

Downeast Lakes Land Trust Headquarters. 28,000 acres  conserved community forest surrounding West Grand Lake.  Hiking trails, canoe camping sites, and summer programs and tours for children and adults.

 

Pine Tree Store. a general store and gas station (Looks very much like it did in 1946)  plus a lunch counter and outdoor dining area where you can get breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just an ice cream. 

 

Passamaquoddy Indian Township Tribal Headquarters and Museum.  The tribe's presence in Washington County with centers in Princeton and Eastport and nearby New Brunswick, Canada dates back thousands of years.  There are rich traditions with much to see and much to read.

 

Town of Princeton is 12.5 miles away with an IGA Food Market and hardware store, two fuel service gas stations, and a public library.

 

City of Calais is 32.5 miles away and is a border connection to its sister city St. Stephen New Brunswick Canada. Restaurants, shops, grocery and hardware stores, cinema, and public library.

 

City of Eastport is 57 miles away and is the easternmost city in the United States (disputed by Lubec, see below), once a thriving sardine cannery and lumber port, host now to whale watching tours, lobstermen, just landed lobster dinners, an artist colony, art galleries, and shops.

 

Town of Lubec, also a former sardine cannery location and fishing port, now with lobster fishermen, restaurants, and galleries.  A great place to observe the 19 to 20 foot tidal swing found in Quoddy Bay.

 

Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge entrance is near Calais. (see website)

 

Quoddy Head State Park is 73 miles, near Lubec. (see website)

 

Campobello Island is 1.5 hours near Lubec, a part of New Brunswick, Canada, home of the beautiful Rosevelt Family summer estate, managed by the U.S. National Park Service.  Open to the public with guided tours, and you can even have tea with Eleanor on Fridays’, a wonderful treat.

 

 

THE LAKE

14,467 acres and 13 miles in length from the village of Grand Lake Stream to the passage where Pocumcus Lakes flows into West Grand Lake, deepest spot, 128 ft; three major coves; Dyer, Farm, and Whitney. The lake has a number of surface and subsurface rock piles.  A guide or good chart and map is advisable. North of the camps connected to the Village is now surrounded by the Downeast Lakes Community Forest Conservation Easement.
